BAAL Vocabulary SIG 2016 – Travel information

Location

By plane

The closest airport to Nottingham is the East Midlands Airport, which mainly serves national or short international connections. From East Midlands Airport you can take the Skylink bus service from outside the Airport Arrivals hall (approximately £5). The closest stop to the conference centre is Paddling Pool UN02, although it does not go directly through the campus and Trent Building is approximately a 10 minute walk from there (see campus map). Alternatively, it is possible to take the bus to the city centre and take a taxi back to the university. You can also walk to the taxi rank on the terminal forecourt and take a direct taxi to the University. The cost of a single/one way journey is approximately £25. Taxis are normally available 24 hours.

International guests may find Birmingham Airport or any of the London airports (Stansted, Heathrow, Gatwick or Luton) more suitable. One way to reach Nottingham from these cities is by train directly to either Beeston or to Nottingham train station. Regular rail services operate between Birmingham and Nottingham (1 hour 15 mins), as well as between London and Nottingham (from 1 hour 40 mins). At Birmingham Airport, you will first need to take the Air-Rail Link which is a free service from the terminal building to Birmingham International train station. For train information, tickets and timetables visit the National Rail Enquiries website. Travelling by coach from these airports (to Nottingham Broadmarsh Bus Station) is another option, which may cost less. Coaches arrive directly outside the Airport terminal and all services use modern, air conditioned vehicles. Coach information, tickets and timetables can be found on the National Express website. Special budget coach trips are available on the London-Nottingham route. From Nottingham Broadmarsh Bus Station you can take either the tram, a taxi or the indigo bus towards Derby/Long Eaton to travel to University Park campus.

By train

Nottingham is right in the centre of the country and is very well connected to all other major cities by the train network. Regular services operate between Nottingham and London St Pancras (from 1 hours 45 mins), Birmingham (1 hour 15 mins), Leeds (2 hours), Manchester (2 hours), or Sheffield (1 hour). Be sure to book as far in advance as possible for the cheapest tickets. For train information, tickets and timetables visit the National Rail Enquiries website.

The University Park campus is 2 miles from the Nottingham Train station, about a 40 min walk or a short bus/taxi/tram ride. The tram stop is just above the railway station and trams running towards Toton Lane will take you to the University of Nottingham stop. From there, it is a 5-10 minute walk to Trent Building (see campus map). When arriving into Nottingham, the main bus hub, Broadmarsh Bus Station, is about 250 metres away from the train station. The indigo bus service towards Derby/Long Eaton runs every 5 minutes and will bring you to University South Entrance or University West Entrance for a 10 minute walk to the Trent Building (see campus map). Taxis will also be available there. These will take you to University Park Trent Building for approximately £10.

University Park campus is between 1-2 miles from Beeston Train station which is between 20-30 min walk or you could take a short bus or taxi ride. Cycle parking is available at Nottingham and Beeston train stations and outside every building at all University campuses.

By bus

Nottingham Broadmarsh Bus Station is served by a number of National Express coaches from all over the UK. Coach information, tickets and timetables can be found on the National Express website. From Broadmarsh bus station, you will need to either take a taxi to campus (approximately £10) or take the indigo bus towards Derby or Long Eaton, usually leaving from Bay 3. Get off the bus at University South Entrance or University West Entrance for a 10 minute walk to Trent Building.

By car

When driving to University Park Campus via satellite navigation, please use NG7 2QL as the postcode. Leave the M1 motorway at Junction 25 to join the A52 to Nottingham. Turn right at The Priory roundabout (about 4 miles from M1), then left at next roundabout to enter the University’s West Entrance. There are limited parking options available around the Trent Building. However, when entering through the West Entrance, there is a large car park in front of the conference centre which is available for use free of charge. There are also a number of car parks available for visitors, staff and students throughout the campus, although please be aware that there is a charge for using visitor car parks.

By taxi

There are taxi ranks throughout the City Centre as well as at the main railway and bus stations. The journey to the campus takes about 10 minutes and costs approximately £10.
